The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering a unique learning opportunity in the form of the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program (IFLIP) for Summer 2021.
Courses are held daily for two weeks (except Saturday and Sunday), from Monday, May 17, through Friday, May 28, for three hours a day. They are taught by advanced graduate students or faculty at the U. of I. All courses will be held online via Zoom.
Courses focus on conversational skills, travel preparation and language survival skills. There is minimal homework, no attendance policy, and no academic credit. Each class must have a minimum of 13 participants or it is cancelled.
Participants can place themselves based on the following guidelines:
• Elementary - for those with little or no prior experience or formal training in the language
• Intermediate - for those with the equivalent of one year of college-level instruction in the language
• Advanced - for those with the equivalent of two or more years of college-level instruction in the language
Registration by Friday, May 7, is strongly encouraged. Course offerings with fewer than 13 participants as of that date are subject to cancellation. Registration fees will be refunded in full for classes cancelled due to limited enrollment.
Classes will take place at the times noted below. Instruction will be offered in the following languages:
Arabic - Elementary (9:00 am-12:00 pm)
Chinese - Elementary (5:00 pm-8:00 pm)
French-Elementary (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm)
Hindi-Urdu (5:00 pm-8:00 pm)
Italian-Elementary (5:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
Italian-Intermediate (5:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
Spanish - Elementary (9:00 am-12:00 pm)
Spanish - Intermediate (1:00 pm-4:00 pm)
Spanish - Advanced (5:00 pm-8:00 pm)
Turkish - Elementary (9:00 am-12:00 pm)
The cost for U. of I. students is $125; for U. of I. faculty, staff, and retirees, $150; and for the public, $180. Payments must be made at the time of online registration.
Cancellations after Monday, May 3, will be assessed a $25 fee. There will be no refunds after Friday, May 14.
